4 Many observers equated this disease with a Faustian bargain embraced by musical savants: a life of intense emotion and experience, followed by dissolution and death. (Photo by Louis-Auguste Bisson, 1849)Ī contagion similarly weighted with symbolic significance, syphilis afflicted a number of composers, including Donizetti, Schubert, Schumann, Smetana and Joplin. ![]() His facial features and posture suggest a long-standing pulmonary illness. This photograph of Frederic Chopin was taken in 1849, shortly before his death at age 39. 9 Many critics have seen his health troubles reflected in the delicacy and turbulence of his piano works. 8 Frederic Chopin’s (1810–1849) (figure 1 ▶) prolonged illness and death has generally been attributed to tuberculosis (though some modern writers suggest cystic fibrosis or another congenital bronchiectatic disorder). Tuberculosis, the condition of poets and heroines of Italian opera, was associated in the public mind with penury and artistic sensitivity, both of which musicians and poets (such as Keats and Shelley) typically possessed in spades. ![]() ![]() 5 – 7 In truth, many prominent composers of the 18 th and 19 th centuries led disordered lives punctuated by financial instability, romantic turmoil, and alcohol overuse, often leading to health crises. For instance, speculation about the death of Mozart, who may have died young from the consequences of rheumatic fever, and of Beethoven, a possible victim of syphilis, have led to a virtual cottage industry of medical detective writing. The medical histories of famous musicians have long been fodder for scrutiny and discussion, with the unorthodox nature of the artistic life often the focus. The Hectic Lives and Early Deaths of Classical Icons Comparison of the first two groups will illustrate how the infectious risk declined as orchestral music reached maturity in the last century, while an examination of jazz and rock musicians will show how new forms of artistic expression have engendered new risks. To illustrate the evolution of infectious diseases among musicians of the 20 th century, I have arbitrarily chosen musicians from four distinct periods: classical musicians who died before 1900, classical composers of the 20 th century, mid-century jazz innovators and rock’ n ’roll mavericks of the late 20 th century. Nevertheless, I feel that important conclusions can be drawn based upon anecdotes and observation. Moreover, though a highly objective statistical analysis would be ideal, the ambiguity of medical diagnoses in the historical record, and the difficulty of defining appropriate cohorts for study and comparison make a quantitative study of these infectious cycles virtually impossible. In reviewing this phenomenon, I have chosen primarily to focus on Western-based musicians and composers (while recognizing the importance of these issues, particularly HIV/AIDS, among musicians in the developing world). Again and again, as new musical forms have surfaced, innovative artists have pursued unorthodox lifestyles that put them at risk for lethal pathogens. However, infectious risks did not disappear, but instead reappeared several times since 1900 as waves of mini-epidemics linked to cycles of substance abuse and other risky behavior. Thus, by the middle of the 20 th century the titans of modern orchestral music, among them Copland, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Bernstein, lived comfortably and succumbed to diseases of old age, such as emphysema and cancer. Coincidentally, during this time the financial insecurity and chaotic lifestyle often experienced by earlier composers evolved into a more bourgeois predictability. 3 Beginning in the mid-1800’s, improved sanitation, vaccinations, and eventually antibiotics led to a steady decline in the incidence of life-threatening infections among the public at large, 4 and the average life expectancy increased 28 years over the next century. Indeed, the toll of contagious illnesses on the health of such luminaries as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven is well known. ![]() Baroque and classical musicians often died of infection, at a rate similar to that of their peers. The interplay between music and infectious diseases is long and complex. Moreover, these deaths, along with those of other well-known artists, raised provocative questions about the relationship between art and illness. 1, 2 His death, along with the demise two years earlier of film star Rock Hudson, focused public attention on the growing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in a way that mere statistics and scientific reports could never have done. On February 4, 1987, the flamboyant pianist Liberace died at age 68 of cytomegalovirus infection associated with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). They deny that they shot at anybody and blame the officer’s death on accidental “friendly fire” from other armed police. The Move Nine were accused of firing the first shot and of killing Ramp. Over time they came to be seen as dangerous non-conformists by the Philadelphia police and city government, leading to a drawn-out confrontation that culminated in the 1978 siege and gunfight involving hundreds of police that saw the death of Officer Ramp and sent nine of the black radicals to prison, potentially for life. They lived in a communal house along with dozens of stray dogs and cats where they would preach their political beliefs day and night at high volume through bullhorns, driving their neighbors to despair. They were like the Black Panthers crossed with nature-loving hippies. Deeply committed to fighting police brutality in African American communities, they were also devoted to caring for animals and the environment. ![]() Move was one of the more extraordinary elements of the 1970s black liberation struggle. For almost 40 years, he visited both his parents in separate penitentiaries but never saw either of them outside prison walls. Which makes Mike Jr a penal orphan of the black power movement. Not only was Debbie Africa sentenced to 30 years to life for the death of a police officer, so too was her husband, Mike Africa Sr, father to Mike Jr, who was caught up in the same confrontation and given the same punishment. He was born to a mother accused and later convicted of third-degree murder in one of the most dramatic confrontations with law enforcement of the 1970s black liberation struggle. As he approaches his 40th birthday in September, he reflects on what a crazy ride it’s been. ![]() ![]() So begins the extraordinary life of Mike Africa Jr, a man born in a prison cell, and his incarcerated parents. At the end of the three days she informed the jailers of the baby’s existence and, once they had got over their astonishment, they arranged for the mother and son to be separated and for the child to be taken to the outside world. She knew it couldn’t last, as jail rules prohibited mothers being with their children. She hid him under a sheet and when he cried, other jailed women would stand outside the cell and sing or cough to obscure the noise. Debbie Africa got to spend three wonderful days with her baby son. In the end, a co-defendant helped her out, scooping up the placenta in her hands and secreting it to the shower room where she flushed it down the prison toilet. ![]() She was determined to give birth on her own without any involvement of the jail officers so she could spend some precious time with the baby. ![]() ![]() This will unlock both the arm and the rafter. This pontoon-style float tube is designed so only your lower legs are below the waterline, and with its V-shaped bow glides easily over the water. That is where the V-shape of my current float tube, the Fat Cat by Outcast, comes in. Tube shape is also important to lessening friction. This reduces resistance and increases the amount of water you can cover in a day. One of the most important things I have learned about float tubes through the years is that you want as much of your body out of the water as you can get. I purchased my first kick boat in 2002 and am now on my third. Likewise, stepping away from the tube is easier than stepping out. And rather than stepping into the center of a tube, you can pull the tube around your legs before sitting. Today they are lightweight and come with pockets, an apron, sewn-in D-rings and carrying straps for easily packing the tube to remote locations. Not only in terms of design and complexity but also in regards to the quality of materials used. The first float tubes I remember were of that simple variety - an inner tube with a canvas seat hung inside the center of the tube - but much has changed since then. Sudden seam ripping syndrome? That could lead to a rather unpleasant surprise for an angler in the middle of an ice cold lake. The seat was fixed, the canvas needed regular maintenance, the tubes were heavy (especially when wet), there were no pockets, and the single stitched seams were subject to sudden ripping.” These first tubes were primitive by today’s standards. These first commercial efforts were made from truck inner tubes covered with canvas. In an article written for Angler’s Journal in 2001, Bob Wiltshire, then director for the International Fly Fishing Center, wrote that “Homemade tubes were the rule until the later 1940s when the Tucker Duck &Rubber Company of Fort Smith, Arkansas, produced the “Float-n-Tote” tubes. Perhaps they saw a fish rise and said, “If only I had my fishing rod and someplace to sit while I cast my fly?” Then they went home and added some kind of seat to their floating tube, and the rest is history. My guess is someone thought up the idea while floating around in an old truck inner tube. No one knows for sure who invented the first float tube or what its origins were, but we can be thankful today that someone gave in to their curiosity and gave it a whirl. ![]() Sometimes referred to as belly boats or kick boats, float tubes are most often associated with fly-fishing for trout on relatively small waterways, but with a little creativity and effort, they can open the door to larger waters and multiple other species.įloat tubes are basically a small, inflatable fishing platform sought out for their portability and relatively low cost. In France, carp anglers and fly fishermen are the most active defenders. The term no-kill is not used in Anglo-Saxon countries. No-kill has become the name for this practice in France. This practice, called "catch and release", consists in deliberately and systematically releasing the caught fish, whether or not they reach the legal catch size set by the regulations. No-kill is a practice developed by American sport fishermen during the twentieth century. There’s a reason for that of course, since a game that’s basically randomized can’t do some of what I just pointed out. That’s stuff that procedurally generated stuff just can’t ever seem to get right. ![]() I like scripted games, with well-designed levels and details. Here’s the main thing: I do not like rougelikes. And I have to add too, that I had some second thoughts when I fired it up for the first time. Your dominant eye is the one through which the thumb stays still.įor more information on Thomas Golf Putters: ![]() One eye will cause the thumb to “move,” while it will remain in basically the same place when looking through the other. Close one eye, then open it and close the other. * To determine your dominant eye, hold one arm straight in front of you, with the thumb pointing up and aligned with an object in the distance, such as a tree. One final note: Do not use this method on a putt that has more than one break. Practicing this on a putting green with a familiar break will help you determine if you're performing the plumb-bob correctly. Did plumb-bobbing give you the right line, or not? Try plumb-bobbing and make note of the results on confusing putts. Those who dismiss plumb-bobbing often point out that many greens feature multiple slopes in different directions, creating intersections that can fool the eyes. You may also notice that the hole tilts in one direction. If the high side is to the right, for example, the putt will break left.
You'll notice that it's also recording my audio. ![]() I'll pull the record features off to the side and just click Record. Now I'm seeing the content right here on my Mac and I can even go full screen like this to minimize. Here's what's really cool, you could actually select your iPhone. And what else we'll do is choose file new movie recording. Now, what you could do is launch quick time. So you might try unplugging and replugging or go with one that is actually been certified by Apple whether that be an Apple branded one or one that has the approved for iOS or iPhone label on it that comes as the official Apple logo. I have experienced that some third-party cables don't work. What you're going to need to do is make sure you're connected with a lightning cable that goes directly into the computer. Now, this is fine and good but what about if you want to record it on the computer? Well, that's possible too. Also, you'll find it inside of your movies folder there for photos, tap to share it and you can easily send that to something like your Mac Book via Airplay. It's a little confusing because it's a movie of your screen but you could drag through or press the play button to get a pretty good idea. If you tap, you'll see it and you can now review the movie and simply watch it. It'll take a second, but it gives you a notice that it was recorded to your photo's role. And that works quite nicely when you're all done, swipe from the upper corner and just stop the record button. This allows me to create tutorial content about a mobile app or a website. This is great so that I could walk people through maybe how to connect with me on LinkedIn or how to post or share a story. So I could tap and go to my profile for example and you see how I'm recording the contents of the screen. So for example, if we go into the LinkedIn application and I open it up, you'll see that it becomes visible. Now, anything I do is going to be visible. For example, the screen recording option is really for recording screens and not so much audio or recording phone calls. Now you might see some extra information in there depending upon the version of the iPhone operating system you're using but in general, you'll see a red indicator light. Also unusually it may not show the correct time. And if you go out to the top level, you'll see things like the upper right corner is lit up. It'll give you a small countdown so you know what's happening. Now it's really simple, just drag from the upper right corner down and tap the record button. If screen recording isn't already in the list, you'll find it in the bottom here and you just need to tap the plus button to add it to the list of available tools. So you can go in here, go to the option for control center and scroll through the list. If you don't see that button, you just need to go under your system preferences. You'll likely see a record button down here that you could tap. And then from the upper corner, drag from the right corner down to open up the notification settings. What you could do is power up your phone, just to simply open it up. Right now for example, on your iPhone, screen recording is built in by default. They had to be jail-broken or hacked to get things out but over time, different manufacturers have made this easier and easier. Early on, it was impossible to record phones or tablets. ![]() ![]() So creating marketing and educational content around this just keeps increasing. There's so much effort putting into app development as well as mobile friendly websites. When your iPad or iPhone and your smart TV are connected, the sound will also be directed to your TV.- As smartphones continue to rise in popularity, the need to screencast smartphones just keeps going up. Once you connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV, you can cast your photos, videos, or any app to your TV.
