Kenyan troops are in Somalia to pursue and suppress the activities of the terror group. This comes amid increased attacks by al Shabaab terror group in Somalia and neighboring Kenya. The ATMIS is also expected to withdraw another 3,000 soldiers by September in compliance with the UN Security Council Resolutions 2,628 and 2,670, which mandate the ATMIS to hand over security responsibilities in agreed areas to Somali security forces. In January, ATMIS handed over Maslah FOB to the Federal Government of Somalia. It is part of seven FOBs to be handed over from ATMIS to the SNA by the end of June 2023. Xaaji Cali is located about 70 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. Bimenyimana.Īs part of the handover, UNSOS which provides logistical support to ATMIS, left behind a borehole, water treatment and storage equipment, generators, solar panels, associated electrical distribution equipment, refrigerators, and freezers. “It is a significant step today by ATMIS, following the previous assessment visit to the FOBs by the Senior Leadership teams from ATMIS, SNA and UNSOS,” said Lt. Richard Bimenyimana, reminded all that the handover is in fulfilment of the ATMIS mandate. The ATMIS BNDF commander of Xaaji Cali FOB, Lt. Now that they are handing over as mandated, we are happy to take over security responsibilities,” said Maj. “We have always had good working relations with ATMIS throughout their operations here. He also noted that the handover was the culmination of cordial working relationships between ATMIS and SNA troops. Today’s handing over forms part of the transfer of security responsibilities,” said Lt. “Over the years, we have worked closely with the SNA and this cooperation has contributed significantly to improved stability and security in this area. The event was attended by senior officials from ATMIS and SNA and chaired by the ATMIS Military Staff Officer for Logistics, Lt. Richard Bimenyimana, officially handed over the facility to the Somali National Army (SNA) Commander in the area, Maj. The commander of ATMIS BNDF 2nd Battle Group in Xaaji Cali, Lt. The FOB was under the Area of Responsibility (AOR) of ATMIS Burundi National Defence Forces (BNDF). Supported by the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), ATMIS, Tuesday handed over the first base to SNA. The resolution mandates ATMIS to drawdown 2,000 soldiers by the end of June 2023. The drawdown of 2,000 troops in compliance with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions has seen the Xaaji Cali Forward Operating Base (FOB) handed over to the Somalia National Army. A set of isocontour maps have been introduced to match the lateral variation of the studied parameters and the aquifer potential to refer to the best direction for further underground water exploration. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has started a drawdown of troops. GIS approach and ArcGIS software have been applied to delineate the spatial distribution of the well performance characteristics, in order to compare between the studied groundwater wells and to integrate the different-acquired data. ![]() ![]() The well efficiency is mostly affected by the studied parameters, particularly the well loss coefficient, the hydraulic parameters and the well design as well. Therefore, it is concluded that the hydraulic and the step-draw down parameters as well as the aquifer and aquitard thicknesses are prospective for further exploration to the north and the east of the northern sector in the study area. In addition, an aquifer assessment quality index has been introduced to assess and to rank the studied aquifer. For the purpose of further exploration, the effective porosity (∅), hydraulic conductivity (K), and transmissivity (T) have been estimated for the wells in the northern sector. The well and aquifer losses coefficients (C and B, respectively), the specific capacity, and the well efficiency as well as the aquifer and aquitard thickness have been estimated and traced through a total of 46 wells that have been distributed through the study area in two sectors, southern and northern. So, the hydrogeological assessment for the Nubia aquifer in East El-Oweinat area has been done through studying and characterising the hydraulic parameters and step-drawdown test. East El-Oweinat project has been recently considered one of the main agricultural projects in the southwest of the Egyptian Western Desert. The Cretaceous Nubia sandstone aquifer is the main aquifer in East El-Oweinat area along the Egyptian-Sudanese borders and in NE Africa.
